  • Hey Y'all - thank you for stopping by Marianne Elizabeth Photography! I am the creative force behind Marianne Elizabeth Photography and I hope you enjoy the images and posts featured here! I love natural light + outdoor photography. My dream is to create images that could be ad campaigns for brands such as abercrombie, anthropologie, j. crew, american eagle, ruche, or threadsence. I absolutely love vintage + modern with a twist of retro thrown in there. I have a crazy goldendoodle named bella, a big ole jeep, and a mustang! I lucked out because my hubby blessed me with the most awesome daughter that I now get to call my own. I love horses, sweet tea, just about all food (especially french fries). I hope you enjoy! Feel free to drop me a line or ask me a question anytime!

Amazingly Gorgeous and Fun Family of 6 | Middleburg Family Photographer

Family Photography

As I continue to develop my photography business, I keep pushing myself in the direction of high school seniors.  I want to shoot primarily senior girls.  I want to offer an amazingly fun, totally glamorous, fantastic product to my senior girls!  Why?! Because what girl doesn’t want to spend a day getting all dolled up to rock it in front of the camera.  You might ask what this has to do with a gorgeous family of 6… WELL… I normally am not TOTALLY excited about family sessions – I don’t believe I give enough direction, I struggle with my posing, I fill out of control, it is hard to get concentration from children… I could go on.. HOWEVER, tonight was definitely none of those things.  The “E” family found me on specialicious – the site where I offered up a great deal on my photography packages.  I wanted to reach out to some new clients and I figured a “daily deal” site would be a perfect way.

M bought the hour long special for his wife for mother’s day.  They wanted to update their family photos since their youngest son J hadn’t been born yet the last time they did family photos.  It definitely was fitting to meet them out in Middleburg for their mother’s day gift on mother’s day.  The entire family coordinated with blues/whites for a casual and fun filled session.  We met around 6, and I was a little worried that the weather wasn’t going to hold out, however, we managed to hang out for a little over an hour and capture some AMAZING shots of the entire family.  It is sessions and families like this that me want to continue offering family photography.  Perhaps not as much as I do now and only to clients that value real emotion and interaction over forced smiles and uncomfortable poses.  I love to see the interactions between the siblings, I love to see how you can be 9 going on 16 and WAY TO COOL for a boring ole photographer like me… or how you can be all smiles for the camera at 7!  I had an absolute blast photographing this family and I hope they enjoyed their session just as much as I did.  Thank you for letting me capture the “true” you guys!

I am absolutely in love with this picture.  I am not sure why, however, I just love it! It is nearly impossible to get 6 people to look at the camera and especially when 4 of them are under the age of 10 and you know what? I am totally okay with the fact they are not all looking.  There is a real quality about that – that really makes the photo for me!

King of the Rock!:)

Once again it was such a fun privilege to get to photograph this great family!  I really had such a blast.  I am glad they found me on specialicious!

Seniorologie – Atlanta 2012 – Serenbe

Seniorologie

“ You’ve got to push yourself harder. You’ve got to start looking for pictures nobody else could take. You’ve got to take the tools you have and probe deeper. – William Albert Allard

It has been a little over three years since I got my first paid photography gig.  Fast forward to now and it is amazing to see how much I have improved my craft and learned about photography.  I have taken two in person workshops (One Light and Seniorologie) and countless online classes/workshops/videos/tutorials/blogs etc to help me develop my craft and style.  This past month I had the great privilege of joining a little less than 30 ladies in Palmetto, Ga at the Inn of Serenbe for a workshop titled Seniorologie.  I haven’t become an exclusive senior photographer, however, I thoroughly enjoy photographing seniors, and might make that 90-100% of my business if the market allows.  At Serenbe, I got to finally meet Amanda Holloway of http://www.amandahollowayphotography.com/ — she is based out of Texas and is an amazing senior photographer.  All her girls look like glamour models and I love her approach to business.  She was just one of the four speakers that presented us with a plethora of knowledge and information.  The workshop was put together by Leslie Kerrigan of http://www.seniorologie.com/ – she coordinating the entire thing and brought out authentic senior girls for us to shoot!  The sessions were styled and the outfits picked out by Courtney DeLaura, of Get Schooled Photo and Peachtree Studio, and supplied by Altar’d State is a contemporary Christian fashion boutique out of Knoxville, Tn. Overall it was an amazing experience.  If you ever have the chance of visiting the Inn at Serenbe or the entire Serenbe community, I would definitely encourage it. I absolutely loved it there, and want to go back!

Glam-A-Thon Boudoir Event in Florida | Northern Virginia Modern Portrait Photographer

Let me apologize again for being the worst website/blog owner in the world.  I have the hardest time keeping up with the posts.  It is so much easier to just upload to Facebook and write a little one liner than it is orchestrate an entire blog post!  Well anyways, in March I flew to Florida to host a boudoir party.  I photographed 10 lovely ladies for the event and truly had a blast!  The days were long, but very rewarding.  I had a great hair and makeup team from Pin Ups Salon in Ocala, it would have been impossible without Elena and Kris there!! We drank champagne and had a girls day out!!  If you are interested in booking a super glam party!!! Let me know!

Maternity | Birth | Newborn ~ Northern Virginia Lifestyle Photography

The Entire Experience

First off, let me apologize for being so far behind on blog posting.  Life has really been busy lately, which is great, but means far less blog posts.  I am not a writer, words come easily to me when talking to people, but sit me down in front of the computer to write a blog post and the words just stop.  I have ideas, but putting those ideas on paper in coherent sentences doesn’t always come easily.  So I procrastinate.  Needless to say over the past month, I have had the opportunity to capture such amazing photographs and meet some awesome families, and now I MUST devote some time to documenting these sessions, so I digress.

I met Ana through work.  She would stop by to say hi to a friend that works with me, and I noticed she was pregnant and GORGEOUS.  I knew I would love to have the opportunity to capture that “maternity glow” and we set up the session.  She was so open to any of my ideas and definitely game for whatever!!! I love clients like that.  Clients that have vision of their own, while still allowing me to direct the session and sometimes push the creative envelope – basically clients that trust my vision.  Ana was definitely this kind of client, she knew what she wanted, but trusted me to capture it and didn’t worry!! We met one weekend in January for the session and really hit it off.  Normally, I shoot the maternity session and then await the arrival of the baby for their newborn session, but something about Ana and her openness pushed me to see if she would be interested in having the birth documented.

Let me say this isn’t for all clients and it is a very intimate experience, so I feel you must be totally comfortable with a basic stranger hanging out with you during a time when you might not feel/look your best.  Photographing a birth is a long and exhausting experience.  You basically hang out at the hospital for about 12 hours, because you know if you were to leave, the baby would make their arrival at that very movement.  It is just like at a restaurant, as soon as you get up to use the restroom the food comes!!! Anyways, so I got a message at 3:00 Am that she was heading to the hospital, she was about 5cm dilated at this point.  I figured, wow, this baby will be here by noon and I can still head off to my 9-5 (which is never 9-5 ha).  I got the hospital at 6:30am and she was 7-8cm at this point.  She had a wonderful cheering section.  Her sister and brother-in-law were visiting from Spain to welcome the arrival of baby J, Dad was there, and me!  Ana felt pretty good, she was more worried about sprucing up here lip gloss and mascara then anything else.  The room remained pretty quiet for the next few hours.  I chatted with her and snapped a few shots, but nothing really changed for the next 8 hours.  We all slept on and off, and awaited any changes.  Let me say that up until the birth, you do think to yourself, what am I doing here?!  What if the baby doesn’t come today?!  What will it be like?  It is the most amazing experience you can ever be a part of.  It is so emotional and beautiful and captivating.  As the time got closer and we prepared for the pushing, the DR told me I couldn’t take any pictures until she determined that everything was okay with the baby.  Ana desperately wanted a picture of John cutting the umbilical cord, so we asked the DR. if this would be okay.  She gave a noncommittal response and we dropped the subject.

THEN

Ana started pushing.  Intense.  That is the only word I have to explain what the actual “birth” was like.  I was standing at her head, camera around my neck, but not allowed to photograph at this point.  Daddy was at her left side and her sister and brother-in-law were standing behind us.  Everyone was trying to see if baby was making her arrival.  Ana was pushing and asking John (I think because they primarily speak Spanish when talking to each other) what the baby looked like (granted she wasn’t born yet).  Well at this point, the nurse yells to be to help Ana push.  I really didn’t know what this meant, but I grabbed her and started coaching her to breathe, to push harder, to breathe again.  She pushed for 7 minutes and baby Johana was born, I remember looking over at her sister, with tears streaming down her face smiling, it was such an amazing experience.  Wow.

THEN

The DR. says time to cut the cord, here you go (to daddy) and says to me are you ready, get the picture… OH CRAP, camera was not set, I still was hovering around Ana head, mesmerized at this miracle, and NOT ready for the moment that I was there for… I got a few shots, but it all happened so fast, and then the DR said “did you get them, no more pictures right now” .. well, that is the moment I had been waiting for, and I wasn’t entirely ready, but luckily, I got a couple!!!

Baby Johana was born February 22, 2012 a little past 6:00 in the evening.  She weighed in at exactly 7lbs and is doing very well.  What an amazing experience!  Congratulations to both Ana and John – and sincerely thank you for letting me share in this amazing day!

Photography Meet Up With Gena Roma Photography | Crystal City

Clickiin’ moms is such a great website.  I really cannot tell you how much I have learned from this photography site.  Well, I recently determined I needed to get a few new head shots to put up on my site.  As an aside, I think a great head shot is so important in this digital age.  Head shots make it possible for potential customers to connect with you and – according to recent studies – head shots are becoming more popular, especially if your company is active in social media.  People want to know who they are talking to and a great head shot is the way to go!  S0, I posted in the forum over at clickin’ moms to see if anyone in the DC area was interested in meeting up and doing a head shot swap.  This is how I met Gena.  She lives in Alexandra – and we decided to meet up in Crystal City and head over to the old Crystal City Motel (quite an awesome place).  She is a canon shooter and I am a nikon shooter – however, we put each other to work and spend a little time in front of the camera – a pretty awkward experience for us both.  Gena did an amazing job of capturing some great shots of me.  She really nailed her exposure and composition and I am very happy with my new head shots!!  Head over to www.genaroma.com to see some more of her work!

gena - I had so much fun shooting with you. It’s nice to be in front of the camera for a change. You rocked my session out, Girlfriend! And I’m very critical of photos of me (that’s why I’m behind the lens). Thanks!
